The Kybella™ Recovery Process: What Patients Should Know By Dr. Suzanne Yee on October 20, 2016

A woman undergoing cosmetic injection treatmentPeople come back to our Little Rock skin care and anti-aging center because of our multi-faceted approach to rejuvenation and aesthetic enhancement. We have so many ways to help reduce wrinkles, eliminate unwanted body fat, and enhance the curves and contours of your body.

One of the new methods we have to enhance facial appearance is Kybella™, a non-surgical fat reduction option for double chins. Let's go over the basics of how it works and then consider the recovery process.

About Kybella™ Treatment

Kybella™ is a non-surgical approach to reducing the prominence and appearance of a double chin. Rather than rely on liposuction or traditional surgery, Kybella™ treatment consists of safe, minimally invasive injections that are administered at the practice.

The active ingredient in Kybella™ is deoxycholic acid. This is a molecule that naturally occurs in body and aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.

Treatment Time and Number of Sessions

The exact number of treatments necessary for optimal Kybella™ results can vary from patient to patient. In many cases, at least two sessions are necessary though up to six sessions are not uncommon. Each injection session requiring 15 to 20 minutes, with each session schedule roughly a month to six weeks apart.

Common Side Effects After Kybella™ Treatment

Some common side effects that patients experience after Kybella™ treatment include:

  • Swelling
  • Discomfort
  • Numbness
  • Bruising
  • Redness

These are all, thankfully, temporary issues and tend to resolve on their own.

Will I Need to Take Any Time Off from Work?

No.

One of the best things about Kybella™ is that it is non-surgical and non-invasive. Patients will be able to return to work and most normal activities after their Kybella™ session is completed. This is unlike facial liposuction, which would require at least a few days away from work to heal.

How Long Will the Swelling Last?

Swelling after Kybella™ treatment typically lasts around four days to a week, with noticeable reductions in swelling as patients continue to recover. Some patients may experience mild swelling for up to two weeks after treatment. The overall degree of swelling will vary from patient to patient depending on how much fat is present around the neck area.

The best way to help relieve swelling is to use cold compresses as directed, and to sleep with your head elevated.

When Will I Start to See Results?

Results may not be readily apparent until a few weeks after Kybella™ sessions because of the swelling patients experience. After two or three sessions, patients should notice a reduction in the appearance of fat along the lower face, and an improved contour of the neckline and jawline.

We will monitor progress with each session to ensure patients get the right amount of treatment to achieve optimal results.

Get in Touch Should Any Concerns Arise After Treatment

Many times patients recover from Kybella™ without any hassles. However, that doesn't mean they lack questions or concerns. If any issues arise between Kybella™ sessions or side effects seem to not be improving, patients should feel free to contact us. By having these issues addressed as soon as possible, various complications and potential problems can be avoided.
