Laser Scar Treatment Can Dramatically Improve the Appearance of Scarring

Though scars rarely pose a significant health risk, patients with severe or noticeable scarring can feel self-conscious about their appearance. Fortunately, laser scar removal is an excellent option for minimizing scars caused by acne, surgery, or other factors. Laser scar treatment is offered by Little Rock plastic surgeon Dr. Suzanne Yee to repair skin and improve the appearance of these aesthetic imperfections. Candidates for Laser Scar Therapy

If you are unhappy with the appearance of large, raised, or otherwise noticeable scarring, you may be a candidate for laser scar therapy. Several different types of laser scar removal are available, with each method optimally suited for a specific type of scar. Raised, reddened scars can be treated using a Candela pulsed dye laser, while acne scars and stretch marks are best treated using laser skin resurfacing. Laser scar treatment can be used on any area of the body, including the face, and works well on many skin types, including very light and dark skin.

How It Works

During treatment, the laser delivers pulses of concentrated beams of light to the irregular, scarred areas of skin. The process vaporizes the damaged skin cells very precisely layer by layer until a smoother, more uniform appearance is achieved. As the outer layer of skin is removed, the underlying skin is heated, stimulating the growth of new collagen fibers.

What to Expect

Laser scar treatment is usually performed on an outpatient basis. Most patients need three to seven appointments to achieve optimal aesthetic results. Each session can generally be performed in as little as 30 minutes, but might take slightly longer depending on the size of the treatment area.

Anesthesia and Sedation

Prior to treatment, a numbing injection will be administered to the treatment site. In some cases, an oral sedative may also be recommended to relax you during your procedure. Extensive laser skin resurfacing can require intravenous (IV) or general anesthesia, but this is much less common.

The Procedure

Once the anesthetic has taken affect, Dr. Yee will deliver laser treatment to the targeted area in a precisely controlled manner, gently resurfacing the skin. Most patients feel minimal discomfort during laser scar removal treatment. Depending on the extent of treatment, most patients are able to resume regular activities immediately following their appointment, or soon after.
