The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is a plastic surgery specialty organization that represents 93 percent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States, along with more than 8,000 plastic surgeons worldwide. Each year, the ASPS compiles plastic surgery statistics, and the 2018 numbers just came in; last year, there were more than 1.8 million plastic surgery procedures performed by the ASPS members.

Total Cosmetic Procedures
There was a total of 17,721,671 cosmetic procedures performed in 2018, 2 percent more than the 17,444,699 from the previous year, according to the ASPS 2018 statistics.
Most Commonly Performed Cosmetic Surgery Procedures
There were a total of 1,811,740 cosmetic surgery procedures performed in 2018. The most popular procedures included:
- Breast augmentation (313,735)
- Liposuction (258,558)
- Rhinoplasty (213,780)
- Eyelid surgery (206,529)
- Tummy tuck (130,081)
- Facelift (121,531)
- Breast lift (109,638)
Procedures That Are Growing in Popularity
The following plastic surgery treatments saw a significant increase in the number of procedures performed between 2017 and 2018:
- Buttock augmentation with fat grafting (up 19 percent)
- Hair transplantation (up 18 percent)
- Breast implant removal (up 6 percent)
- Liposuction (up 5 percent)
- Breast augmentation (up 4 percent)
- Breast lift (up 4 percent)
Procedures that saw a decline in popularity include buttocks implants, pectoral implants, breast reduction in men, and dermabrasion.
Most Common Minimally-invasive Procedures in 2018
The total number of minimally-invasive procedures performed in 2018 was 15,909,931. This represented a 2 percent increase from the previous year.
The following non-surgical or minimally-invasive cosmetic treatments saw the most procedures performed in 2018:
- Botox (7,437,378)
- Soft tissue filler (2,676,970)
- Chemical peel (1,384,327)
- Laser hair removal (1,077,490)
- Microdermabrasion (709,413)
Fat fillers for the face, platelet-rich plasma, and non-invasive fat reduction (such as CoolSculpting) all saw significant increases in popularity. Laser hair removal, ablative laser skin resurfacing, and microdermabrasion saw small decreases in the number of procedures performed compared to the previous year.
2018 Reconstructive Procedures
There was a total of 5,805,880 reconstructive procedures performed in 2018. The most often-performed reconstructive procedures of 2018 included tumor removal (4,462,519), laceration repair, other than facial (253,447), maxillofacial surgery (204,521), and scar revision (182,250).
Pelvic floor reconstruction saw the largest percentage increase between 2017 and 2018 with an 8 percent jump to 1,719 procedures performed.
