At Dr. Suzanne Yee’s Cosmetic & Laser Surgery Center in Little Rock, AR, we offer MiraDry® to help our patients combat excessive underarm sweat

Today, we discuss MiraDry recovery, and explore a few tips and tricks that can help you enjoy a swift and successful healing period.

MiraDry®: An Overview

MiraDry eliminates underarm perspiration at its source: the sweat glands. Using miraWave energy, a non-surgical technique, we can destroy the glands that cause sweat and odor.

After administering local anesthesia, a handheld device is applied to the underarm area, and the energy pulses destroy the glands instantly. Although MiraDry is a fairly simple and straightforward procedure, knowing what to expect after treatment can help you enjoy a comfortable recovery.

Tips and Tricks for a Successful Recovery

As a general rule, patients can return to work, school, or routine activities the next day after treatment. Following MiraDry, there is no need to apply anti-perspirant or deodorant. However, if you still wish to apply these products, it is best to wait a few days before doing so.

Additionally, shaving your underarms should only resume once the discomfort has subsided. Otherwise, it could lead to unnecessary sensitivity.

Healing and Recovery

In most cases, patients who undergo MiraDry treatment should take the remainder of the day off. Slight discomfort and swelling is common after the procedure. While discomfort will diminish within the first few days, swelling can linger for several weeks.

We recommend applying ice or cold compresses under the arms in 20-minute increments for the first 48 hours to mitigate inflammation. Taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, can help with this as well.

It is also common to experience numbness in the treatment areas for several hours following your procedure. In some cases, this numbness can also affect the arms. This should eventually diminish.

Most patients notice an instantaneous reduction in underarm sweat. While most individuals report approximately 60 percent less perspiration immediately after treatment, they report about 90 percent less after their second session.

Side Effects after Treatment

As with any cosmetic or medical procedure, there is a risk for post-operative side effects. Some of the most common side effects following MiraDry treatment include:

  • Swelling in the torso or the arms
  • Bruising in the treatment areas
  • Redness and irritation
  • Bumps underneath the skin
  • Altered sensations in the treatment areas
  • Partial hair loss
  • Small blisters under the arms
  • Darkening of the skin in the treatment areas

When to Call Our Office

All of the aforementioned side effects are normal following MiraDry. Most of the time, they should not be a cause for concern. However, if you notice any of the symptoms listed below, you should call our office immediately for further instructions:

  • Redness, pain, skin that is hot to the touch, or other signs of infection (typically lasting more than one week)
  • Pain that does not improve with the use of over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Lingering redness, inflammation, or bruising that does not improve after two weeks
  • Muscle weakness in the arms or fingers
