What a mommy makeover changes
A mommy makeover is a custom treatment plan combining several procedures to rejuvenate the body. It focuses on the areas pregnancy changes most, the breasts and the stomach, and specifically the changes that do not bounce back with diet and exercise.
SHAPE
Improved shape
Surgery is the most effective way to eliminate fat and improve tone when diet and exercise are not enough. Your makeover can slim a stretched stomach, restore volume and perkiness to the breasts, and redefine your curves.
SKIN
Smoother skin
Added fat or slackened muscles make it harder to exercise and to do ordinary things. Reducing fat and tightening muscle improves physical comfort, which tends to make the healthy habits easier to keep.
COMFORT
Increased comfort
Many patients have both concerns and choose to address them together in a single procedure.
CONFIDENCE
Better confidence
The one patients talk about most. The plan is designed around your specific areas of insecurity, which is what makes the shift in confidence disproportionate to the surgery itself.
What goes into a mommy makeover
A mommy makeover usually combines two or three procedures, most often a tummy tuck, breast surgery, and liposuction. The exact number depends on your health, your goals, and what is safe to do in one operation. In some cases Dr. Yee and Dr. Pournik will recommend splitting it across more than one surgery rather than compressing everything into a single day.
Tummy tuck
Removes excess skin around the midsection, tightens the abdominal wall, and slims the upper and lower stomach. It also corrects separated abdominal muscles, diastasis recti, which is common after pregnancy and does not resolve with exercise.
Breast augmentation
Adds volume and shape to breasts that have become smaller or less firm. Saline or silicone implants, sized to your goals, restoring what was lost, or going further.
Breast lift
For breasts that did not return to their pre-pregnancy position because the skin lost elasticity. Tightens excess skin and raises the breasts. Frequently combined with augmentation, since most patients have lost position and volume both.
Breast reduction
Sometimes breasts stay large after breastfeeding ends. Reduction brings the bust to a more manageable size and relieves back pain and other physical discomfort.
Liposuction
Eliminates stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise. Commonly done on the abdomen alongside a tummy tuck, but your makeover can also include the hips, thighs, buttocks, breasts, or upper arms.
Are you a candidate?
A mommy makeover suits women in good overall health, at or near their ideal body weight, and finished having children. Candidates typically struggle with sagging breasts, loose abdominal skin, stubborn fat, or other changes from pregnancy and breastfeeding that diet and exercise have not improved.
Specifically: Our team recommends being within 10 to 20 pounds of your target weight, with a BMI of 30 or under, for your safety and for the best result. Our team also recommends waiting at least 6 to 12 months after childbirth to let your body heal, and finishing breastfeeding before moving forward.
Realistic expectations matter. A mommy makeover can restore your shape and your confidence. It will not stop the natural aging process, and a future pregnancy can undo the results, which is why finishing your family first is the recommendation rather than a rule.
Not ready for surgery?
Several nonsurgical treatments complement surgical results, or stand in for them.
- CoolSculpting®
Freezes fat cells, which the body then flushes. Little to no downtime, you can resume your “mommy” activities right after treatment. - EMSCULPT® NEO
Electromagnetic energy causes thousands of muscle contractions, building muscle and burning fat in the abdomen, buttocks, and elsewhere. - truSculpt® flex
Strengthens and tones muscle, adjusted to your fitness level and goals. Most patients describe it as similar to an intense workout. - Microneedling
Diminishes post-pregnancy stretch marks and uneven texture across 3 to 5 sessions.

What to expect on procedure day
Because every mommy makeover is different, the day varies. Generally a mommy makeover takes three to six hours, depending on which procedures are included and how many.
Dr. Pournik performs mommy makeovers at the practice’s fully accredited surgical center under general anesthesia, as an outpatient procedure, so you go home the same day
- Arrange a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment, and to stay with you for at least the first day.
- Maintain a stable weight in the weeks leading up to surgery
- Stop smoking well in advance of your procedure date
- Avoid blood thinners and any medications your surgeon advises against
- Arrange transportation to and from surgery, plus a companion for the first 24 hours
- Set up a recovery space at home with essentials within easy reach
- Arrange childcare or help with the kids — lifting young children is restricted during recovery, so plan for extra hands in the early weeks
Recovery and results
Recovery looks different for everyone, because it depends on the exact combination you have. In general the first couple of weeks are the most challenging, particularly if your makeover includes a tummy tuck or breast augmentation.

- FIRST TWO WEEKS
The hardest part. Most patients take about two weeks away from work and daily responsibilities to focus on rest and let the body heal without added stress. Soreness and discomfort are expected, especially in the first week, and are well managed with prescribed medication. - WEEKS 2 TO 3
Energy and comfort improve gradually, and many women start to feel more like themselves. Keep taking it slowly. - UP TO 6 WEEKS
Reduced activity. No strenuous exercise and no heavy lifting, including lifting young children, until you are cleared. For more extensive combinations, plan on the full six weeks. - MONTHS 1 TO 6
Swelling and bruising fade and the most dramatic improvements become visible. Results develop gradually rather than arriving. - 6 MONTHS TO 1 YEAR
Final results. Scars soften and lighten over the following 12 to 18 months and often become barely noticeable. Outcomes are long-lasting, though large weight changes or a future pregnancy can undo them.
Why choose a board-certified surgeon
A mommy makeover isn’t one operation. It’s several, and they have to add up to a single coherent result rather than a set of separately good outcomes. Deciding what goes in one session and what waits is the judgment call that determines both safety and how the result reads.
Combining procedures means longer anesthesia time and a recovery that overlaps across several areas at once. Our team reviews your specific risks and whether staging makes sense for your goals at consultation, so you can decide with full information.
WHAT SETS OUR TEAM APART?
- Board certified by the American Board of Surgery
- Mommy makeover among fellowship specialties
- Dr. Yee’s 20+ years of multidisciplinary experience
- Dr. Pournik’s twelve years of abdominal surgery experience, including hundreds of complex reconstructions
- Staged approach when needed, prioritizing the long-term result over doing everything at once

Combining with other procedures
The core combination is covered above. What patients ask about next is everything outside it. Arms, inner thighs, and the upper back are the most common additions, usually because the same weight changes that affected the abdomen and breasts affected those areas too, and treating them in the same session avoids a second recovery later. Some patients also add a skin resurfacing or laser treatment at the end of the surgical session, since that downtime overlaps with recovery they’re already taking.

WHY CHOOSE DR. POURNIK
Homayoun Pournik, MD
- Fellowship-Trained Cosmetic Surgeon
A mommy makeover is the hardest kind of plan to get right, because it isn’t one operation. It’s several, and they have to add up to a single coherent result.
Dr. Pournik completed his cosmetic surgery fellowship through the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery at Southern Surgical Arts in Chattanooga, one of the highest-volume body contouring centers in the country, performing roughly 1,800 procedures in a single year. Before that, twelve years in transplant surgery: more than 300 organ transplants and hundreds of robotic hernia repairs and complex abdominal reconstructions.
That background shows up in how he plans. “Staging gives you success,” he says. Primary procedure first, evaluate the result, then return for refinements if they’re needed.
“It’s very hard to scare me in the operating room, because I’ve taken the engine out and put it back in.”

Do you have other questions?
Whether you are looking to restore your body right after childbirth or a decade later, the consultation is where the plan gets built. Dr. Pournik performs a full evaluation, works out which procedures actually serve your goals, and is honest about what is safe to do in one operation and what is better staged.
Frequently asked questions
There is no single right answer. Some women plan surgery soon after childbirth, others wait years or a decade. The recommendation is to wait until you have stopped having children, finished breastfeeding, and reached a stable weight.
Different for everyone, but most patients need at least a few weeks of downtime. More extensive combinations including breast augmentation and abdominoplasty involve a longer recovery. Plan on about 14 days off work and a reduced activity level for 6 weeks.
Wait at least 6 to 12 months after childbirth to let your body heal. If you are breastfeeding, wait until you have finished.
Come within 10 to 20 pounds of your target weight, with a BMI of 30 or under, for your safety and the best result.
Usually two or three; often a tummy tuck, breast surgery, and liposuction. The exact number depends on your health, your goals, and what is safe to perform in one surgery. In some cases splitting it across multiple surgeries is the better plan.
You can still have children afterward, but it is not recommended; you may need a revision to restore your results after another pregnancy or period of breastfeeding. Waiting until your family is complete is the advice.
Expect soreness and discomfort, especially in the first week. It is usually well managed with prescribed medication and improves steadily as you heal.
Incisions are unavoidable in most surgical procedures, but there are techniques to place them where they show least; under the crease of the breast, below the bikini line. Dr. Pournik will go through the options with you.
Like any major surgery: infection, bleeding, scarring, or complications related to anesthesia. Every precaution is taken to minimize them.
They can be very long-lasting, especially alongside healthy habits. Aging, hormonal changes, and weight fluctuations can affect the outcome over time; and a future pregnancy can undo it.
