Liposuction Candidates: Do I Qualify?

Liposuction is a versatile cosmetic procedure used to subtly improve body contours by removing small, stubborn deposits of fat around the abdomen, flanks, hips, or other areas. Unlike most cosmetic surgeons, Dr. Suzanne Yee offers multiple forms of liposuction, including SmartLipo and VASER® LipoSelection.

To qualify for liposuction, you should be within 30 percent of your ideal weight and be in good overall health.

Whether performed as a single treatment or combined with another procedure, liposuction with Dr. Yee can help you achieve the look you desire. In addition to having pockets of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise, liposuction candidates also need to meet certain criteria. At her Little Rock, AR, plastic surgery practice, Dr. Yee can review your medical history and discuss your goals to determine if this procedure is right for you. To explore your candidacy for liposuction, reach out to our plastic surgery practice and schedule an appointment.

Physical Requirements

Patients seeking to undergo liposuction must meet certain medical criteria to be eligible for treatment. General physical requirements of liposuction include:

  • Being within 30 percent of your ideal weight: Liposuction is intended to eliminate small areas of fat, but it is not a weight loss treatment and it is not a substitute for a balanced diet and regular exercise.
  • Maintaining good overall health: Patients with chronic or life-threatening conditions can be at a high risk of experiencing complications during the healing process.
  • Having sufficient skin elasticity: If a patient's skin does not contract properly after surgery, he or she can be left with drooping, sagging tissue.

In addition to these general requirements, good liposuction candidates are those who are at least 18 years old, not using tobacco, and not pregnant or nursing.

LipoSelection is an advanced technology that uses ultrasound energy to heat cells beneath the surface of the skin. This causes the skin to contract, creating a tighter, more toned appearance.

The Importance of Realistic Expectations

Undergoing cosmetic surgery is a personal decision that should be made based on your individual goals. It should not be motivated by pressure from family, friends, or a significant other. As with any cosmetic procedure, liposuction candidates should maintain a positive outlook and realistic expectations about the results of their treatment. Dr. Yee and our team use plastic surgery to help patients achieve significant aesthetic improvements, but not necessarily perfection. When you visit our practice for a liposuction consultation, Dr. Yee will explain the steps of the procedure in detail, review your medical history, and listen carefully to your goals to determine if this treatment can best achieve the look you desire. After undergoing treatment, she will provide recommendations to help you maximize the results of your procedure. By eating a healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, and coming to our office for follow-up appointments, as necessary, you can enjoy your improved body contours for many years to come.
