Breast Reduction Surgery

Large breasts can be heavy, uncomfortable, and cause pain in your neck, shoulders, and back.

Breast reduction surgery can provide you with relief, giving you smaller and firmer breasts that are more proportionate.

Dr. Suzanne Yee in Little Rock, AR, can reduce the size of your breasts with minimal scarring and a fast recovery time.

What a Breast Reduction Can Do for You

A breast reduction (also known as "reduction mammoplasty") is a form of plastic surgery that removes excess fat, breast tissue, and skin from your breasts to reduce their size.

There are different breast reduction techniques, but Dr. Yee prefers using the tumescent liposuction method. This method can often be completed in under three hours, results in minimal scarring, has fewer risks, and has a quick recovery time when compared to traditional surgical methods.

However, Dr. Yee may recommend traditional breast reduction surgery in certain cases. For example, traditional breast reduction is better suited for women whose breasts are mostly comprised of glandular breast tissue instead of fat.

How Much Does a Breast Reduction Cost?

The industry average for a breast reduction is $5,913, but the cost can be higher or lower depending on the variables of each case.

Most medical insurances contribute to the cost of reduction mammoplasty if they determine it's medically necessary. However, we understand if you don't meet the requirements or you don't have insurance. Our Little Rock, Arkansas, location offers affordable financing through CareCredit® that allows you to pay in monthly installments.

The Tumescent Liposuction Procedure

Before undergoing the tumescent liposuction procedure at our Little Rock, AR, location, Dr. Yee will determine if it's the correct procedure for you during a consultation. She may request that you stop taking certain medications, cease drinking alcohol for a certain amount of time, and stop using tobacco products to minimize your risk of surgical complications.

Day of Procedure

Anesthetic

Dr. Yee will first inject a solution containing an anesthetic into the breasts to ensure your comfort for the duration of the procedure.

Solution

The solution will cause the fatty layer of your skin to swell and become firm, so your plastic surgeon has better control over contouring the area. The solution also causes blood vessels to shrink during the procedure, resulting in reduced pain, swelling, bruising, and blood loss during the procedure and after surgery is completed.

Incisions

Small incisions are made in the creases of your breasts or in your armpits. The incisions are small, and will result in virtually no detectable scarring a year after surgery.

Cannula

A cannula is inserted into the incisions so it can access the fatty layers of breast tissue. The excess fat is suctioned away.
Most patients typically remain at our Little Rock, AR, location for about an hour following their surgery to recover, but can return home afterward. Patients are then given a compression garment that must be worn to help manage swelling and improve recovery.

Recovering From a Tumescent Liposuction Breast Reduction

You can expect minimal pain after your tumescent liposuction breast reduction. Any soreness you experience can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Swelling typically subsides in a few days. Over time, the skin of your breasts will conform to your smaller breast size. Though you'll see improvement within two weeks, it can take several months to see the final results of your breast reduction.

Most patients can return to non-strenuous work in a day or two and resume their normal activities within two weeks.

During the recovery period, Dr. Yee and her staff will monitor you for post-surgical risks including, hematoma and seroma. Recovery time may take longer for patients who undergo a traditional breast reduction procedure.

Understanding the Risks of Breast Reduction Surgery

Most complications associated with breast reduction surgery are minor, but may include:

  • Hematoma: A pooling of blood underneath the skin.
  • Seroma: Fluid build-up at the incision site.
  • Infection: Can be caused by wound separation or not properly caring for incisions.
  • Wound separation: A reopening of the incision that may be caused by overexertion.
  • Loss of sensation: Temporary loss of sensation in the nipple or breast due to nerve damage.

In addition to the above, there are general surgical risks to consider, including a negative reaction to anesthesia, blood clots, unsafe increase in blood pressure, healing difficulties, and extensive scarring.

Long-term risks after a breast reduction surgery include:

  • Asymmetrical breasts
  • Uneven areola position
  • Permanent loss of sensation
  • Inability to breastfeed

Choosing a highly trained plastic surgeon like Dr. Yee in Little Rock, AR, can minimize these risks and boost the likelihood of achieving results you will love.

FAQ

Should I get a breast reduction before or after having children?

Breasts change during pregnancy and breastfeeding, so it's best to have your breast reduction once you're finished having children. This is similar to what we tell patients interested in a mommy makeover.

How old must I be to have a breast reduction?

Most breasts are fully developed by the age of 17, though some women's breasts develop into their early twenties. People as young as 18 can schedule a breast reduction with us if they have large breasts that affect their self-esteem or general health.

Are breast reduction scars noticeable?

Tumescent liposuction requires incisions that are so small, they will be virtually unnoticeable. If you have to undergo a traditional surgical option, your plastic surgeon will only make incisions in areas that are well-hidden, like the crease under your breast and below your areola. Post-surgical scars can be difficult to detect, even in revealing clothing.

How do I know if my insurance will contribute to the cost?

First, contact your insurance company to see if they have any prerequisites for determining candidacy for a breast reduction. Before they commit to contributing to the cost, you may have to verify with your general doctor that your breasts cause bodily strain and underlying health problems. Once approved, you can call our office and we can help you with any necessary paperwork.

What are the benefits of breast reduction surgery?

This surgery can allow women with heavy breasts to feel confident with their figure, wear clothes that fit them, and participate in the physical activities they love. This plastic surgery procedure can also benefit men who have gynecomastia, or enlarged breast tissue.
