What to Expect from Your Breast Reduction Surgery

Customizing Your Breast Reduction for Optimal Results

During your consultation, Dr. Yee will examine your breasts and discuss your goals for treatment to help determine which surgery technique will achieve your desired results. Dr. Yee performs breast reduction using traditional surgical techniques, or through tumescent liposuction. Although breast reduction through liposuction is the preferred method, Dr. Yee may suggest a traditional surgical technique for certain patients. The surgery technique selected may be any of the following:

Traditional Anchor Pattern Technique: This technique is typically performed on patients with moderate to extremely large breasts since it allows Dr. Yee to more easily remove fat and glandular breast tissue. This surgical technique also removes excess skin, which results in smoother breasts. The anchor incision consists of a horizontal incision along the breast crease and a vertical incision up to and around the nipple (anchor-shaped). This technique involves the most extensive incisions  and also has an increased risk for loss of sensation and inability to breastfeed. When compared to the other techniques, the anchor pattern technique is the best to remove excess skin and excess breast tissue.

Vertical “Short Scar” Technique: The vertical incision technique is ideal for women with moderately large or large breasts that require less tissue removal. This technique creates an incision around the nipple and extends vertically down to the breast crease, which results in less scarring, a quicker procedure, and less recovery time. There is some risk of sensation loss and inability to breastfeed, however, these risks are lower than with the anchor technique. Rather than removing excess skin, it is folded, and could appear bumpy or uneven for several months after the surgery. 

Scarless Liposuction Technique: For patients whose breasts consist of more fatty tissue than glandular tissue, liposuction may be used to remove fat and reduce breast size. Liposuction will reduce the volume of the breast; it will not alter the shape or position of the breast. This technique involves a small incision either in the crease of the breast or in the armpit. Over time, the skin will shrink to accommodate the smaller breast size. There is no risk of sensation loss or an inability to breastfeed with liposuction, and the technique typically has a much shorter recovery period. This technique may also be used for men with gynecomastia.
