A Neck Lift Can Help You Achieve a More Youthful Look
As we age, skin in all areas of our bodies loses elasticity. As the area between the chin and sternum loses its youthful definition, it can make men and women appear much older than they actually are. Dr. Suzanne Yee performs neck lift surgery at her Little Rock, AR, practice to restore taut, rejuvenated contours in the neck and jawline. By removing excess skin and artfully tightening remaining tissues, she can help you achieve better neckline definition so you can look younger and feel more confident. A neck lift can also be performed in conjunction with a mini facelift or full facelift for a more dramatic effect. not only wish to restore definition to the jawline, but also to eliminate the "turkey wattle" effect that occurs when the skin covering the Adam's apple region of the neck begins to sag. The procedure shares some similarities with mini facelift surgery, which also addresses the jawline.

Neck Lift Candidacy
A neck lift is designed specifically to correct sagging skin farther down the neck. Generally, neck lift candidates enjoy good overall physical health and are non-smokers. Additionally, candidates for a neck lift should not have any skin conditions that could interfere with the healing process. Depending on your goals, a neck lift can be an excellent complement to a mini facelift, or incorporated into a full facelift procedure, addressing every area of the face from the neckline to the brow. You will undergo an in-depth consultation with Dr. Yee to determine if this procedure is right for you. She will evaluate your skin and its elasticity and explain your options in detail.
Preparing for Your Neck Lift
Proper surgical preparation can help to ensure your safety and the best possible results. After assessing your candidacy, Dr. Yee will begin planning your procedure. She will also provide guidelines to follow at home in the weeks leading up to your surgery. This could include instructions regarding:
- Smoking: You should stop smoking at least six weeks beforehand. Tobacco products can interfere with your body’s ability to heal properly, increasing your risks and leading to unsatisfactory aesthetic results.
- Diet and medications: Stock up on healthy, easy-to-prepare foods, as well as compression bandages, medications, and button-down clothing.
- Assistance following surgery: Find someone who can drive you home from surgery and, if possible, stay with you for a few days to help with household tasks.
- Time off: Arrange to take at least a week off from work.
Following your surgery, Dr. Yee will provide written instructions to follow regarding medication dosages and other important information to help aid your recovery.
Types of Neck Lifts
There are several neck lift methods available. Dr. Yee may use one specific technique or combine aspects from all three techniques, depending on your goals and the amount of lift you desire.
- Liposuction: The most minimally invasive method, this treatment will eliminate excess fat cells through a small tube called a cannula. Dr. Yee proudly uses advanced types of liposuction, such as LipoSelection, which will have less impact on the surrounding tissue.
- Cervicoplasty: This method removes sagging skin through small incisions near the ears or just under the chin.
- Platysmaplasty: A banded appearance in the neck results when your muscles lose tone and definition. Using this technique, Dr. Yee will lift and reposition the platysma muscle.
The Neck Lift Procedure
Neck lift surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. On the day of your surgery, Dr. Yee will make markings on your neck and lower face to guide her as she creates the incisions. She will administer anesthesia for your comfort throughout surgery. You may only require local anesthetic, combined with a mild sedative. However, we want you to be completely at ease, so if you are feeling anxious, we can also provide deeper sedation. After supplying any necessary medication, Dr. Yee will create incisions behind your ears. This placement will result in subtle scars hidden in your hairline. She may also make an incision beneath your chin depending on the extent of treatment needed.
By removing excess skin and artfully tightening remaining tissues, Dr. Yee can help you achieve better neckline definition so you can look younger and feel more confident.
Once the incisions have been made, Dr. Yee will carefully lift the underlying muscular structure beneath the skin of your neck and jaw, which will highlight the natural contours of your neck. She will also trim away excess tissue and suture the remaining tissues into place. She may also perform liposuction at this time. If you only desire a slight lift, this procedure may be sufficient all on its own. Finally, Dr. Yee will close up the incisions with traditional or dissolvable stitches. As she does, she will carefully lift and smooth the skin, avoiding an unnatural, stretched appearance. The entire treatment typically takes approximately one to two hours.
Like many patients, you may choose to combine a neck lift with another facial cosmetic treatment. Popular complementary procedures include facelifts, brow lifts, and injectable skin treatments. These treatments may take place at the same time as your neck lift or at a later date, depending on your health needs and Dr. Yee’s recommendation.
Neck Lift Recovery
Once your neck lift is complete, you will rest in our office for a period before a friend or loved one transports you home. You must limit yourself to minimal activity in the days following surgery. It is especially important to avoid placing any strain on the incisions as they heal. Although our treatment is safe with negligible risks, as with any surgery, you could still experience some swelling, bruising, and inflammation. The severity will depend on the type and extent of your neck lift. During the initial healing period, medications and compression bandages can help to ease any discomfort. Dr. Yee may also place surgical drains, which will come out after a few days.
You must return to visit Dr. Yee within the week. She will make sure that your incisions are healing properly and that there is no risk of infection. She will also let you know when you can return to work and other normal activities. Typically, you can go back to work in a week or two, although you will need extra rest if you have a particularly strenuous job. Depending on your fitness regimen, you can usually resume your normal exercise routine in three to four weeks. Discomfort will fade within a few weeks, and the full results of your neck lift will usually be apparent within a year of your surgery.
