Microneedling
You can minimize the appearance of acne scars or signs of aging without surgical procedures. Microneedling is a nonsurgical treatment that can address various skin concerns by stimulating the production of collagen. Dr. Suzanne Yee offers radiofrequency-enhanced microneedling for faster, longer-lasting results.

What Is Radiofrequency Microneedling?
Microneedling uses tiny, medical-grade needles to gently puncture the skin. As these pinpricks heal, your skin produces more collagen, helping to reduce the appearance of various skin concerns like scarring and signs of aging on the face and body.
Our office uses an advanced device called Scarlet RF, which combines the power of traditional microneedling with radiofrequency energy to offer enhanced results. Similar to traditional microneedling, pinpricks are made in the skin with ultrafine needles. However, once the needles have penetrated the skin, radiofrequency energy is delivered into the deeper layers of skin, stimulating collagen production and amplifying the results of microneedling.

What Makes Scarlet RF Stand Out?
The Scarlet RF technology is one of the most advanced technologies for minimally invasive, radiofrequency microneedling. Patients find Scarlet RF one of the most tolerable microneedling treatments on the market.
The system uses short-pulse radiofrequency energy to precisely target deeper layers of skin without damaging the surface, minimizing downtime while maximizing collagen production. Scarlet RF can safely treat all skin types and tones and is effective for a wide range of concerns, including skin laxity, fine lines, acne scars and enlarged pores. It’s designed to deliver excellent results with minimal discomfort.

Preparing for Microneedling
Dr. Yee will inform you of a few pre-treatment steps that you should follow to ensure a healthy treatment, but here are a few tips to keep in mind:
-
- Avoid harsh skin treatments that can increase your skin’s sensitivity, such as retinoids, exfoliants and topical antibiotics for about a week before treatment.
- Avoid anti-inflammatory medications like NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen, MOTRIN® and Advil® for at least three days before your session, as these medications can lead to bruising following your procedure.
- Wear sunscreen daily and avoid exposure to the sun for the week leading up to your appointment.
- Do not shave the day of your procedure to avoid skin irritation. However, be sure to shave any thick patches of hair in the treatment area the day before your procedure.
- Prepare for cold sores by taking an antiviral medication two days before the treatment and again on the day of your appointment if you are prone to cold sores. Microneedling may trigger them.
- Avoid blood thinners for about a week before your treatment if your doctor says it is okay to temporarily stop taking these medications, as they can increase bruising.
- Cleanse your skin on the day of your procedure with a gentle cleanser. Do not wear any makeup, lotion or other skin care products on the treatment site.
The RF Microneedling Procedure
You can expect the entire microneedling procedure to take less than an hour, from walking into our office to walking out to your car. To begin, a topical anesthetic will be applied to the treatment area to numb the skin, making the treatment virtually painless.
Next, your provider will select the appropriate microneedling handpiece, customize the depth of the needles and will begin working across the skin, gently pricking the surface with the needles as radiofrequency energy is delivered deep into the skin. This process typically takes about 20 minutes.
After your treatment, a cream or serum may be applied to reduce any redness or irritation. One benefit of fractional RF microneedling is that patients can experience results in as few as three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. More sessions are required for traditional microneedling, but the radiofrequency energy streamlines the process.

Microneedling Recovery and Results
Microneedling requires minimal to no downtime, so you can typically return to your normal daily activities right after treatment. You may experience some temporary side effects such as redness, bruising, minor bleeding and swelling in the treated area for a few days.
To support healing and minimize irritation, avoid harsh skin care products, sun exposure, germs (such as those on dirty makeup brushes) and strenuous exercise for at least 72 hours. We also recommend that you skip makeup for 1 to 2 days to allow your skin to recover. Use a mild cleanser and apply sunscreen regularly to protect your skin as it heals.
Most patients will start to notice improvements in skin texture and tone within the first week after treatment. However, optimal results typically develop gradually over the next 2 to 3 months. For the best outcome, we may recommend a series of treatments, depending on your specific needs.
